What are the minimum waterproof/breathability ratings?
Most jackets start at 10K waterproofing, which handles average snowboarding conditions with light-to-mid precipitation. Brands like 686 offer 15K-20K ratings for storm riding and all-day sessions in heavy snow. Higher numbers mean better protection in wet conditions.
What is a powder skirt?
An elastic band sewn into the inside bottom of the jacket that cinches around your waist to block snow from getting up your jacket during falls or deep powder riding. Most jackets from 686, Dravus and Empyre include them, and they're usually removable.
How should snow jackets fit?
Leave enough room to layer a hoodie or fleece underneath without restricting arm movement. Sleeves should cover your wrists when you reach forward, and the hem should drop below your waist. Empyre and 686 offer regular and relaxed fits depending on how much room you want.
