Having transcended through many decades and multiple trends, Dr. Martens has established itself as much more than a footwear brand, but rather a symbol of subcultural youth, rebellion, and being different.
The date was April 1, 1960 when the first pair of Dr. Martens 1460 boots was created. British shoe manufacturer Bill Griggs collaborated with Dr. Klaus Maertens to bring something innovative and different to the market. Maerten was a former World War II soldier who had sustained a foot injury during a ski trip. Old style combat boots proved to be painful and aggravating to the injury, creating the need for something different. Maerten and his university friend Dr. Funck invented the air-cushioned "bouncing sole" to fill the void of workwear boots that were both comfortable and durable. Griggs found Maertens and his partner through an advertisement about their revolutionary air cushioned soul, and from there an icon was born.
"Docs" were originally created as workmen boots, but were quickly adopted by rebellious and subcultural groups and became a fashion staple throughout the decades. Utilizing sleek and durable leather uppers in a variety of silhouettes and colors, DM boots and shoes have become famous for their uncompromising looks, comfort and durability. Pair that with the Goodyear welt construction and the famous Dr. Martens air cushioned sole that is resistant to oil, fat, acid petrol and alkali, and you have yourself a boot that is timeless in both quality and style.
Originally built for workwear and durability, Dr. Martens have grounded themselves as a definitive cultural icon that continues to grow in popularity as cultural trends come and go.
